GREENFIELD — The Greenfield boys basketball team was able to get whatever it wanted on the offensive end of the floor against Hopkins Academy on Friday. 

The Green Wave set the tone early, racing out to a 15-0 lead before the Golden Hawks got on the board with three minutes to go in the first quarter. 

Greenfield led 26-8 after one quarter and 45-18 at the half. The Green Wave scoring didn’t stop there, as they knocked down seven 3-pointers in the third to hold an 81-36 lead after three.

Five different Greenfield players finished in double figures, as the home team cruised to a 94-45 Hampshire League South win at Nichols Gymnasium. 

With all the scoring going on, it was the extra effort and all the little things that the Green Wave did that impressed coach Angelo Thomas the most. 

“We played how we need to play tonight,” Thomas said. “We gave the extra stuff we need. Jon Breor didn’t just give us rebounds but he gave us tipped balls and extra effort. David Hernandez-Jung sprinted the floor twice and blocked shots. That's the extra effort we need. Jacob Blanchard got on the floor, Caleb Thomas took it to the hole strong, Ollie Postera came in and played like a senior. If we’re going to beat teams like Hoosac Valley [on Monday] and compete against South Hadley and try to make noise in Western Mass. and states, that’s what we need to do.” 

The Green Wave (8-3) knocked down 13 3s as a team on Friday, led by eighth grader Grayson Thomas who swished eight 3s himself. Grayson Thomas finished with 24 points in the win. 

Caleb Thomas had a big second quarter to help him record 19 points, Jon Breor tossed in 17 points, Caleb Murray scored 14 points while Postera finished with 11 points in the win. 

As Greenfield hits the home stretch before the postseason, Angelo Thomas noted that his team has been learning throughout the year, and that the Green Wave are showing growth and learning from early season mistakes. 

“They’re starting to listen,” Angelo Thomas said. “You can only tell these guys so many times but they need to do it and experience it yourself to learn. At some point they have to go through the process and figure it out themselves. They’re starting to do that.” 

James Fitzgibbons led Hopkins with 23 points in the loss. 

Mahar 50, Pioneer 44 — Talk about a reversal.

After losing to the Panthers by 27 points when the teams met less than a month ago, Mahar flipped the script to pick up their biggest win of the season on Friday night in Orange.

Jayden Delgado and Will Barnes each scored 14 points to propel the Senators to a 50-44 Hampshire League South win.

"What a basketball game and environment," Mahar coach Chad Softic said. "The boys fed off of it and played outstanding. We've always prided ourselves on defensive urgency and taking care of the basketball and we certainly did that tonight."

Trailing 35-34 entering the fourth quarter, the Sens (10-3) outscored Pioneer by a 16-9 margin the rest of the way to seal the deal. Morgan Softic (eight points, four rebounds) and Derek Collins (seven points) also paced Mahar, and Lucas Isrow dished out 10 assists.

Pioneer (9-3) received a team-high 11 points from Josh Wood, and Brayden Thayer joined him in double figures with 10. Kurt Redeker and Hugh Cyhowski each scored eight points on the night.

Athol 64, Hampden Charter 36 — Ben Kearney scored a game-high 17 points, helping the Bears to a comfortable independent win on Friday night.

"Wasn’t the prettiest but we got the 'W,'" said Athol coach Brian Patria.

Angel Castillo and Ethan Bacigalupo added 14 points apiece for Athol, which used a 26-point third quarter to run away and hide.

Frontier 56, Ludlow 43 — Owen Babb was a force inside for the Redhawks, tossing in 27 points — 21 coming in the second half — to help Frontier earn an independent win over the Lions in Ludlow on Friday. 

Frontier trailed 26-18 at the half before outscoring Ludlow 38-15 in the second half. 

Nico Fasulo scored 10 points, Garrett Dredge finished with nine points while Alex Ellis added five points for the Redhawks. 

Smith Academy 69, Turners 61 — Thunder Jackson Cogswell tipped in a rebound with 16 seconds to go to tie the game at 55, with Turners getting a stop to force overtime. The Falcons were able to pull away in the overtime frame to earn a Hampshire League North win in Turners. 

Branden Truesdell led Turners with 23 points. Cogswell scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds, Alex Quezada finished with 12 points while Caden Williams-Senethavisouk added five points for the Thunder. 

Greg Stone (25), Garret Willard (20) and Connor Kowalski (19) led Smith Academy in scoring. 

Hampshire 59, Franklin Tech 40 — The Raiders used a 26-8 edge in the second quarter to take control of the Hampshire League North contest on Friday night.

Brody Hicks paced the Eagles offensively with nine points, while Robert Belval and Cam Candelaria added six points apiece.

Tech led 12-8 after one quarter before falling into a 34-20 halftime deficit.

Girls basketball

Hopkins 40, Athol 29 — Olivia Horrigan scored 16 points, 10 coming in the fourth quarter, for the Bears in an independent loss to the Golden Hawks in Hadley on Friday. 

Jenna Bonenfant scored five points while Anna Duquette and Ally Robertson each had four points for Athol.

Girls basketball

Franklin Tech 42, Pioneer 37 — The Eagles won their eighth game in a row on Thursday, holding off the Panthers to secure at least a share of the Franklin County League South title.

Franklin Tech, which hasn’t lost since a Dec. 19 defeat at Frontier, improved to 12-2 overall, 8-0 in the FCL South.

Pioneer held a 23-21 lead at the half before the Eagles took a 32-30 lead going into the final eight minutes. 

It was Hannah Gilbert who led the charge on offense for Tech, finishing with 24 points. Lea Chapman scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, Kyra Goodell recorded five points while Kait Trudeau provided two points and seven steals in the win. 

Addie Harrington and Natalie Rios each scored 11 points, Kyler McClelland tallied six points while Hailey Ring recorded five points for the Panthers. 

Boys basketball

Hampden Charter East 63, Turners 50 — Branden Truesdell scored 15 points for the Thunder in a loss to the Wolves on the road on Thursday. 

Turners trailed 25-24 at the half and fell behind 40-32 going into the fourth quarter.  Cam Burnett, Jackson Cogswell and Davian Bala each scored six points while Caden Williams-Senethavisouk and Deven Sloan each finished with five points for the Thunder. 

Girls swimming

Turners 104, Chicopee 68 — Sophia McComb, Avery Heathwaite, Tristan Bliss and Madi Liimatainen finsihed the girls medley in a time of 2:09.64, taking first, qualifying the group for Western Mass. and helping the Thunder knock off the Pacers on the road on Thursday. 

Liimatainen placed first while Ainslee Flynn took third in the 100 free. Bliss won the 100 fly (1:14.78), Sigrid Calhoun won the dive, Ella Sibley took third in the 200 IM while Sylvie DiBartolomeo took second and Rose Fortin came in third in the 500 free. 

Boys swimming

Chicopee 59, Turners 51 — Liam Bliss won the 100 back and 50 free while Tyler Galenski came in first in the 200 free and 500 free for the Thunder in a road loss to the Pacers on Thursday. 

Cody McDonough placed second in the 100 free and 100 breast for Turners.
