LEYDEN — About 12 hours after Leyden and Bernardston firefighters extinguished an attic fire on East Hill Road early Monday morning, the fire reignited later in the afternoon.

Firefighters responded to 350 East Hill Road at approximately 1:45 p.m. Monday, where heavy smoke rose from the roof and upper stories of the home. Insulation could be seen dropping from windows as firefighters worked to douse the lingering flames.

Leyden Fire Chief Carey Barton said no one was injured in the fire, and the damage that was mostly contained to the second story, was “the same as it was [Monday] morning.”

Barton added that firefighters, at approximately 2:15 p.m., were mainly doing “overhaul,” or searching for and extinguishing hidden fire and smoldering areas after a main fire had already been extinguished.

According to a written statement from the Bernardston Fire Department, firefighters were initially dispatched at approximately 1:49 a.m. to the East Hill Road home for a reported chimney fire with extension into the attic.

“The Engine 2 crew pulled a line making their way up to the second floor with heavy smoke conditions. The attic was difficult to access but was eventually breached and heavy fire was found in the central walls and in the attic, pushing out the delta side,” Bernardston Fire wrote. “E2 crew was able to knock the main fire down and bring it under control. Leyden and other mutual aid companies were able to assist with overhaul and ventilation.”

Bernardston firefighters were released at 5 a.m., while Leyden firefighters stayed at the property longer on fire watch, according to the Bernardston Fire Department.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
