GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Tae Kwon Do Center gave $6,091.53 to the Greenfield Recorder’s Warm the Children fundraiser on Friday, representing donations from the center’s 20th annual “break-athon” in November and subsequent fundraising efforts.

“I’m very proud of all the time, effort and goodwill that my tae kwon do students and staff invest in this incredibly important and worthwhile community-oriented activity, which is devoted to taking care of local children,” Greenfield Tae Kwon Do Center owner and instructor David Johnson wrote in an email.

The tae kwon do studio has hosted its annual break-athon since 2002 to raise money for Warm the Children. Students and staff have their family members and friends pledge a certain amount of money for each board they break. In November, students broke about 50 to 100 boards each.

The studio raised $4,492.50 from the break-athon itself, with additional money coming from selling the kindling the students produced at the event at a price of $5 per bag, raffles and jar collections.

Lamore Lumber Post & Beam in Deerfield, The J Team in South Deerfield, Cowls Building Supply in Amherst and Hamshaw Lumber in South Deerfield donated lumber for the 20th annual break-athon.

“With their generous contributions of hundreds of linear feet of lumber,” Johnson said, “we are annually able to host and participate in our break-athon fundraiser.”
