Connecticut man closes on McGovern dealerships in Greenfield

GREENFIELD — A Connecticut businessman has purchased two local dealerships from McGovern Automotive Group, though he decided to close one of them due to a perceived lack of feasibility behind a manufacturers’ request to relocate the business.
Alex Castergini closed on McGovern Chevrolet at 54 Main St. and McGovern Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram at 39 Beacon St. a couple weeks ago, though he is shuttering the latter because he said it is not possible at this time to move the business as the manufacturers wanted him to. The Main Street location has been renamed Greenfield Chevrolet.
“It’s great,” he said, adding that 14 vehicles were sold in the first four days. “Everything went pretty smooth. Actually, we’ve been experiencing some good business up there already. So, yeah, we’re excited.”
Castergini, who lives in Bozrah, Connecticut, declined to disclose how much the locations sold for. He said he had wanted to transfer all workers at the Chrysler location, which he had renamed Greenfield Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, but “there’s not enough spots for everybody.” However, he said the Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram employees have a lot to offer any employer.
“I’m pretty sure they’ll be gobbled up pretty quick by the surrounding dealerships,” Castergini said.
He mentioned he might eventually decide to sell used vehicles at the 39 Beacon St. property, rather than work with the manufacturers.
Castergini is a member of the Swanzey, New Hampshire-based Maverick Motor Group and is part-owner of two of the group’s eight dealerships, though the Greenfield acquisitions are not owned under that business umbrella. Castergini also runs the day-to-day operations at Cargill Chevrolet in Putnam, Connecticut.
“I think it’s very, very similar to the market that I’m in Putnam,” he said of Greenfield.

Castergini previously said this deal started when he got a phone call from Matt McGovern, McGovern Automotive Group president, to ask if he was interested in buying the properties. He is not purchasing the empty lot that McGovern Automotive Group wants to sell on the Mohawk Trail, near the Interstate 91 rotary.
McGovern Chevrolet of Greenfield had been Dillon Chevrolet for 60 years until an ownership change in 2022. Brothers Jay Dillon and Tom Dillon Jr. inherited the dealership from their father in 1998.
Tom Dillon Jr. said he thinks Greenfield Chevrolet will be a good fit for the small city, where he said people still appreciate the experience of in-person shopping and quality customer service.
“I don’t know [Castergini] personally, but I’ve heard good things about him,” said Dillon, who spent 50 years working at the dealership his father started but has had no involvement with it since the sale to McGovern Automotive Group. “He understands small communities.”
