GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Public Library will welcome local author Rebecca Daniels on Tuesday, March 18, at 2 p.m. in the library’s Conference Room.
Daniels’ grief memoir, “That Day and What Came After: Finding and Losing the Love of My Life in Six Short Years,” explores the author’s experience of the unexpected death of her husband from sudden cardiac arrest a mere three months after his doctors had declared him healthy. The author shares her experiences in the immediate aftermath, reminisces about the details of the couple’s late-in-life courtship and marriage, and imparts other experiences she has gained along the grieving road in the years since becoming a widow.
Daniels taught performance, writing and speaking in liberal arts universities for more than 25 years. She was the founding producing director of Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland, Oregon, and directed with many professional Portland theater companies in the 1980s.
Copies of all three of her books will be available for sale. For more information, contact Lisa Prolman at librarian@greenfieldpubliclibrary.org or call 413-772-1544.

Recent scholarly research shows that women had larger roles in the early Roman Empire than previously acknowledged. In this slide presentation with Abrahamsen, a Harvard-trained New Testament scholar, attendees will see how ancient texts have been misinterpreted and how archaeology cannot only expand our knowledge of the ancient world, but also help promote justice and equality in modern society.

GREENFIELD — Dog licenses for 2025 are available to purchase through the City Clerk’s Office.
All renewals and new dog licenses must be submitted with proof of rabies and spay/neuter. If this is your first time licensing a “new-to-you” dog when you submit proof of rabies, it is important to show the chain of custody for ownership. For example, the rabies paperwork should either have your name as owner or the dog’s name on the rabies certificate should be the same as your request to license.
The cost for each dog license is $10 for spayed/neutered dogs or $15 for unaltered dogs. Checks/money orders should be made payable to the City of Greenfield. As of June 1, there will be a $25 late fee assessed per dog if registration is late.
Residents can obtain a dog license through three methods:
In person: Dog licenses may be obtained in person at the City Clerk’s Office, Room 104, City Hall, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., other than posted holidays.
By mail: Use the request form that can be downloaded at tinyurl.com/DogLicenseApplication. Send your request in writing with proof of rabies and spay/neuter, payment and a self-addressed, stamped envelope (or add $1 for postage and envelope) to the City Clerk’s Office, 14 Court Square, Greenfield, MA 01301.
Online: Order your dog’s license online at doglicenses.us/MA/Greenfield. Online orders will include a processing fee and $1 for postage. If you are having trouble logging in, email support@doglicenses.us for assistance.
Additionally, kennel inspections are underway as required by Ollie’s Law. If you have a kennel and have not scheduled an inspection with the animal control officer, contact them at 413-522-3564.
With questions about the dog licensing process, contact the City Clerk’s Office at 413-772-1555.
GREENFIELD — The LAVA Center is seeking submissions for plays and directors for its annual new play festival, “On the Boards.” The deadline for both play submissions and director applications is March 31.
All Massachusetts-based playwrights are welcome to submit a new or in-development play to be directed and read on a weekend in June. These readings offer a focus on a play’s script, as they will be free of any technical elements (no props, costumes, sounds or lighting).
Playwrights can submit one play each. Plays can be any length. Selected plays will be paired by The LAVA Center with a director who will coordinate a reading on a Friday and Saturday in June. Plays need to be new or developmental works, as the purpose of the festival is to present new plays as readings to an audience to gather feedback.
Selected directors, of all experience levels, will work with a playwright to interpret, cast and rehearse a reading. In addition, the director will facilitate a talkback session with the audience to gather feedback for the playwright.
Directors must be available for a directors meeting on Monday, April 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.; auditions on Friday, May 2, and Saturday, May 3; and at least one weekend in June. In addition, directors will have a meeting with their assigned playwright between April 15 and May 2, and two rehearsals in May.
With questions, email info@thelavacenter.org. For more information or to apply, visit thelavacenter.org/on-the-boards.

GREENFIELD — If you have passed by the former First National Bank building on Bank Row in the past few days, you may have noticed two new pieces of art in the windows.
In 2024, the Greenfield Redevelopment Authority selected art to be printed and placed on the facade of the art deco building. Each month, two new prints from local artists are on display, with each artist being given a $50 stipend for the use of their art. New monthly prints will be posted through May 2025.
On the left-hand side this month, passersby will find “Keystone” by Aric Russom.
“I am drawn to the interplay between objects and environment. My window series is a collection of reductive linocuts exploring an ongoing interest in the relationship of interior and exterior,” Russom said in a statement. “Using local architecture as a vehicle, I aim to investigate the notion of a window as both portal and surface. These works explore light, color, shape and texture, and examine themes of isolation, interconnection and states of being. While the focus of this work tends to be grounded in formal elements, there remains an underlying narrative of the way in which we experience and occupy space.”
On the right-hand side, passersby will find “Infinite View” by Mark Majeski. The print showcases a bright winter morning on Cape Cod, revealing nature’s way of providing a new outlook for the day.
