GREENFIELD — In its annual effort to raise $20,000 for the city’s Independence Day fireworks celebration, the Recreation Department will host three different fundraising events between this Friday and June 26.

This year’s fundraising events will start months before the fireworks celebration, which is scheduled for Saturday, July 5, with an indoor mini golf tournament at the Recreation Department’s 20 Sanderson St. location to take place Friday, April 4, from 5:30 to 8:45 p.m. and Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. A food truck will be stationed at the site throughout the festivities.

“This year, we are getting creative and planning multiple community events to assist with our goal,” Recreation Director Christy Moore said in a statement. “We hope [residents] can join us as we work to put the ‘fun’ in this season’s fireworks fundraising.”

Mini golfers ages 3 and up must pay $5 to participate. Children under 3 can participate for free.

Then, Court Square will be home to the fourth annual Cornhole Tournament at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. According to Mayor’s Office Communications Director Matthew Conway, the event will feature a team competition with round-robin games to establish divisions.

Each game will be played until a team secures 21 points on 27-foot lanes. Prizes will be awarded to teams that finish in first and second place in each division. Teams interested in registering must pay $50 to play.

A live DJ, food trucks, raffles and children’s activities will be on hand, and alcohol will be available for purchase.

“Cornhole is a very fun, easygoing kind of recreational sport,” Conway said. “It’s not the most difficult or physically challenging, so again, it’s another thing where they really want to make things inclusive for the community. We want people to come out and enjoy the fun.”

Conway said that although this year’s fundraising festivities will feature some budding traditions, such as the mini golf tournament and the cornhole tournament, it will also entail a new trivia event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, at the Greenfield Elks Lodge, 3 Church St.

The “Triple Trivia” night will feature questions on music, movies and motoring at a $20 sign-up fee. Visit friendsofgreenfieldrecreation.org/p/32/Triple-Trivia-Fireworks-Fundraiser to reserve a spot.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase and there will be cash prizes for the winning teams, each with a maximum of six people.

Moore, in an interview Wednesday, thanked the community for its continued support of the Recreation Department and encouraged Greenfield residents to participate in the upcoming activities.

“We keep reminding the community that this is a very positive celebration that is near and dear to many of our community members,” Moore said. “Without their financial support, and the support of local businesses, there is a possibility that, eventually, we may have to discontinue it. I hope that it doesn’t come to that. … People from across Franklin County come to Greenfield to see our fireworks.”
