A second consecutive run through the MIAA Division 5 state tournament wasn’t in the cards for the Mahar boys basketball team this winter.

The 10th-seeded Senators won their Round of 32 contest against Boston United last week, but they were on the road to take on No. 7 New Mission — the defending Div. 5 state champs — on Tuesday in the Round of 16.

Mahar trailed 29-24 at the half and were down just three points midway though the third quarter when New Mission pulled away, as it took a 51-39 lead into the fourth before pulling away with a 68-45 victory in Boston.

The Senators closed out their season with a 14-8 record.

Jayden Delgado finished with 25 points, Morgan Softic and Derek Collins both tallied eight points while Marshall Ames added four points in the loss.

New Mission (15-6) advanced to play either No. 2 Hopedale and No. 15 Monson in the quarterfinals.
