Letter: What happens to Greenfield trash?

I called the Greenfield Department of Public Works and asked a simple question: What happens to Greenfield trash? Where does our trash go for final processing — an incinerator, a landfill? Is Greenfield trash hauled to Long Island and dumped on Joey Buttafuoco’s lawn?

After three phone conversations with the DPW, the answer I received is an entity called F&G LLC, located in Wilbraham and Enfield. The person who answered the DPW phone could provide no further information, except to say that F&G is a transfer facility.

Trash is transferred where? I do not think it is delusional to expect that the Greenfield municipal department that handles trash disposal should be able to answer the question what happens to Greenfield trash. And it also seems that Greenfield should have that information easily available so that citizens of our fair city have the opportunity to exercise oversight to ensure that our trash is processed in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner.

I’m asking again. What happens to Greenfield trash — what is the final destination and how is it processed?
