WHATELY — Three people were injured Wednesday morning following a rollover on State Road (Routes 5 and 10) near the Interstate 91 Exit 35 off ramp and the Whately Diner.

First responders were dispatched to State Road, across from the exit ramp, at approximately 10:39 a.m. for a report of a crash. Upon arrival, they saw a white Ford Expedition on its roof near a tree, with the rear end of the SUV facing the Whately Diner’s parking lot.

Whately Police Officer Zachary Liebenow said there were three occupants, one male and two females, who suffered injuries “ranging from minor to major.”

“It appears as though the vehicle failed to slow on the Exit 35 off ramp, went through the stop sign at a high rate of speed and then subsequently ended up in the embankment,” Ziebenow said. “The crash is still under investigation and is being headed by the Massachusetts State Police as it originated on the ramp.”

Whately Fire Chief JP Kennedy said all occupants were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, including one by medical helicopter, although the exact extent of their injuries was not immediately known. It was originally believed there were four occupants in the SUV, but first responders determined there were only three.

The crash brought extensive mutual aid to the area of Routes 5 and 10, as the Whately Police Department was assisted by the Deerfield and Sunderland Police departments, as well as State Police. The Whately Fire Department was assisted by the South Deerfield Fire District and an engine from the Greenfield Fire Department, and South County EMS and AMR responded with ambulances. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation was also on scene.

Traffic was reduced to one lane at the time and a police officer was stationed at the entrance of the exit ramp on Interstate 91.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
