The inaugural Coach Bob and Pat Hinds Scholarship Award was handed out to a pair of student-athletes at Mohawk Trail Regional last week. 

The scholarship, which will give $1,000 to two graduating seniors each year moving forward, was awarded to Paige King and Savannah Simmons. 

Pat Hinds and Bob Hinds were important figures at Mohawk Trail for over four decades. Bob Hinds began coaching JV basketball for the Warriors in 1988 and later served as the middle school girls basketball coach and both the varsity and middle school baseball coach. When he wasn’t coaching he was still on the sidelines supporting the players. He also became a special education teacher in 1988 at the high school, served as a class advisor and volunteered for years in the gym and in the weight room. 

Pat Hinds spent over 10 years working in the library at Mohawk Trail and also served as a class advisor. She and her husband volunteered their time in the school, assisting in classrooms and contributing to the start of the West County Youth Soccer League in the earl 1980s. 

Both King and Simmons met the qualities that Pat Hinds encouraged in the students around him in both the classroom and on the field, which is a commitment to extra-curricular activity, dedication to the community, humility, belief in themselves and the notion that with hard work and discipline, anything is possible. 

“This is another in the long line of things Bob and Pat have done to help kids in the district,” Mohawk Trail athletic director Greg Lilly said. “They’ve always put their money where their mouth is and done whatever they can to help out those in our community. 

“It’s a no brainer to go with Paige and Savannah for this scholarship,” Lilly continued. “They’re both hard working athletes and are the epitome of what Bob stood for as both a coach and as a teacher.” 

King is a two-sport athlete at Mohawk Trail, playing field hockey in the fall and tennis in the spring. She did not lose a match this season on the tennis courts. 

Simmons is a three-sport athlete with the Warriors, competing in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
