Following a successful Annual Town Meeting vote and Proposition 2½ override at the ballot box in May 2024, the Warwick Fire Department was able to purchase this new engine. After arriving earlier this year and responding to its first call for service on March 18, the Fire Department also used the new fire engine on Wednesday to respond to a single-vehicle crash with minor injuries on Athol Road, according to a post shared on the Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Cub Scouts participating in pinewood derby

BERNARDSTON — Cub Scout packs 3 and 18 are hosting their annual pinewood derby on Saturday, April 5, at Bernardston Elementary School, 37 School Road.

Doors open at 10 a.m., registration for participants begins at 11 a.m. and the race kicks off at noon. All members of the public are invited to attend and cheer on the kids. A snack bar and a bake sale will also be available.

Next puzzle swap set for April 5

NORTHFIELD — Free used puzzles will be available at Dickinson Memorial Library on Saturday, April 5, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Attendees are advised to park in the back and enter through the side door of the library. Turn left to find the Community Room.

Participants are invited to take as many puzzles as they want, and can keep them as long as they need. The puzzle swap is offered monthly.

Farley String Band to perform at Monday Cafe

BERNARDSTON — The Bernardston Senior Center’s next Monday Cafe will be held April 7, with entertainment by the Farley String Band at 3 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. meal.

The meal will consist of hot dogs, baked beans, root vegetables and brownies. The suggested donation for meals is $3.50.

NORTHFIELD — Linda Ackerman of Greenfield Savings Bank will be the guest speaker during the Northfield Senior Center’s coffee social on Monday, April 7. The coffee social starts at 10 a.m. and the presentation starts at 11.

The event will include a “Test Your Knowledge” card game focusing on information discussed during previous coffee socials. The game will be a review for some and a learning discussion for others.

Two Happy Feet walks planned in April

NORTHFIELD — The Happy Feet walking group will embark on two walks in April.

First, on Tuesday, April 8, walkers will meet on the Cabot Woods side of the Turners Falls Canal Trail at 11 a.m. Seniors with a walker or wheelchair are encouraged to attend, and dogs on leashes are welcome.

Then, on Monday, April 28, walkers will meet at 10 a.m. at the Northfield Senior Center and walk to Northfield Elementary School to meet some of the students during their recess. Dogs will not be allowed on this walk. Rain will cancel.

April 17: Safety preparedness presentation

NORTHFIELD — Luca Calvani, Community Disaster Program manager for the American Red Cross in Worcester and Franklin counties, will lead a safety preparedness presentation at the Northfield Senior Center on Thursday, April 17, at 1 p.m. The event will include a hands-only CPR lesson and will end with a question-and-answer period.

Learn about affordable housing at Senior Center

BERNARDSTON — Pam Parmakian and Tina Cloutier will provide general information and answer questions during an affordable housing workshop at the Bernardston Senior Center on Monday, April 14, at 3 p.m. The workshop is designed to help seniors navigate the affordable housing application process.

‘Steppin’ Out’ walking group to meet regularly

BERNARDSTON — “Steppin’ Out,” a casual walking group, will be taking walks from the Bernardston Senior Center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. starting April 14.

Participants will meet in the Senior Center parking lot and will walk 30 to 45 minutes at an easy pace.

My Art Company classes focusing on vignettes

BERNARDSTON — My Art Company will offer a pair of classes at the Bernardston Senior Center on Tuesdays, April 15, and April 22, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

A vignette, a picture that doesn’t have a definite border, incorporates the beauty of the paper and is a way to learn some of the basic techniques of working in watercolors. Participants are advised to bring brushes and a palette if they have one. Attendees who have a watercolor kit for watercolor journaling are advised to bring those as well.

Space is limited and early sign-up is advised. There is a recommended donation of $5. Call the Senior Center at 413-648-5413 for more information.

John Taylor offering photography sessions

BERNARDSTON — John Taylor will offer professional photography at the Bernardston Senior Center on Wednesday, April 16.

Taylor will review the shots and select the best for a 5-inch-by-7-inch portrait. Participants can bring a flash drive to obtain the digital images.

Rippopotamus to perform at Warwick Town Hall

WARWICK — The Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Warwick Arts Council and Wooden Fender will present a concert/dance by Rippopotamus at Warwick Town Hall, 12 Athol Road, on Saturday, April 19, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

This is the second of five events to be presented in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. A $5 donation is suggested.

Rippopotamus offers funky, jazzy grooves and high-energy jams. Founded in Amherst in 1990, and now Boston-based, the band has performed from Florida to Canada, and has been recognized with a Boston Phoenix/WFNX Readers Poll Award and a Boston Music Award.

Musician Dave Herrera to perform during Memory Cafe

NORTHFIELD — Musician Dave Herrera will perform during the Northfield Senior Center’s monthly Memory Cafe on Wednesday, April 23, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

This program provides support and socialization for adults dealing with memory-related issues and their caregivers. A light lunch will be provided.

Bank rep to talk scams

BERNARDSTON — Linda Ackerman of Greenfield Savings Bank will discuss the top 12 scams of 2024 and what to watch out for in 2025 during a talk at the Bernardston Senior Center on Tuesday, April 22, at noon.

Travel Club heading to Hadley

The Travel Club offered by the Bernardston and Northfield senior centers will head to Hadley on Friday, April 25, at 9 a.m. The trip will include shopping in the morning, followed by lunch.

Sign-ups are limited to six people from each town. There will be a waiting list in case one town has spaces open up. The cost for the van is $6 roundtrip. Participants will meet at the Bernardston Senior Center. Alternatively, pickup at home is available.

April 26: Democratic Caucus

LEYDEN — The Leyden Democratic Caucus will be held Saturday, April 26, at 5 p.m. at Leyden Town Hall, 16 West Leyden Road, and virtually at us02web.zoom.us/j/83188776849.

The caucus is held to elect a delegate and alternate to the annual Massachusetts Democratic Convention, which will be held Sept. 13 in Springfield. Alex Bausch, organizing director of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, will join the group and local Democratic Committee members have been invited to attend as well.

At 6 p.m., immediately following the caucus, the Leyden Democratic Committee will hold an organizing potluck. Leyden residents are encouraged to bring their favorite dish and visit with neighbors while making plans on how to take action together.
