Brick House offering Women’s Money Matters program

TURNERS FALLS — The Brick House Community Resource Center is contracted to offer the Women’s Money Matters program, a 12-week online course for anyone who identifies as a woman and who wants to learn to manage their finances. The program also provides a personal money coach for each participant.

There are several start dates being offered: May 20, June 5 (in Spanish), June 6, June 8 and June 26.

May 18: Crab Rangoon Pierogi Pop-Up

TURNERS FALLS — Our Lady of Czestochowa Church at 84 K St. is hosting a Crab Rangoon Pierogi Pop-Up event on Saturday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We have received many inquires seeking our crab rangoon pierogi that we offered at our National Pierogi Day celebration in October,” Walter Hoszkiewicz, Parish Council president, said in a statement. “It is by far the most requested filling and a solid fan favorite.”

In response to the high demand, the St. Hyacinth Pierogi Makers have been making these non-traditional dumplings twice a week for the past two months to prepare for Saturday’s event. The recipe offers a new take on a traditional culinary treasure. While typical Chinese crab rangoon offer a small amount of seafood in them, the St. Hyacinth pierogi are filled with a 50/50 mixture of seafood and cream cheese.

There will also be frozen pierogi, plus a bake sale featuring a wide variety of freshly baked goods such as breads, cakes, cookies and Polish desserts.

Meet Montague’s K-9s at Greenfield Savings Bank

TURNERS FALLS — Greenfield Savings Bank at 282 Avenue A invites the community to come meet the K-9s of the Montague Police Department on Saturday, May 18, from 1 to 2 p.m.

K-9 Artie and his handler Officer James Ruddock, along with K-9 Mack and his handler Officer Dan Miner, will visit the bank. Artie and Mack are different breeds of dogs and, as such, take on different roles in the department.

Learn about wild and cultivated edible plants

TURNERS FALLS — Author/illustrator Blanche Cybele Derby will bring wild and cultivated edible plants to a free indoor presentation for ages 12 and up at the Great Falls Discovery Center, 2 Avenue A, on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to come with an open mind to find some new gourmet treasures to add to their culinary repertoire. Many despised plants, like garlic mustard and goutweed, can be tasty additions to a diet.

This event is part of the Discovery Center’s Food, Farms and Factories programming, and is being held in conjunction with the community art show at the center in May and June called “What’s On Your Plate?”

Relay For Life team holding fundraiser

GILL — The Stars of Hope Relay For Life team is partnering with The Mill gas station for a penny drive. For every gallon of gas sold between May 26 and June 1, The Mill will donate a penny toward the cause.

Relay For Life raises money for the American Cancer Society’s life-saving cancer research and programs.

Semi-annual water bills due June 1

TURNERS FALLS — The Turners Falls Water Department’s semi-annual water bills have been mailed. These bills represent water used from approximately Oct. 1, 2023 through March 30, 2024.

Payment is due by June 1 to avoid a $20 late fee. Payments can be made at 226 Millers Falls Road, by mail or online at turnersfallswater.com.
