‘Extension Cords’ music festival set for Sunday

TURNERS FALLS — SPS Entertainment is hosting “Extension Cords,” a day of electronic music, on Sunday, June 2, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Peskeomskut Park.

This free festival features bands from throughout the region, including Neonach, Marasca, Dave Thomas and The Frosty Five, ICICl, Girshwin, Small Choice, and Sagan and Sigourney.

“I love Peske Park and seeing shows there, and how accessible it is to the community,” SPS Entertainment founder John McGuigan said in a statement. “I thought the idea of a full day of electronic music performed live outside in nature had the potential to be a cool melding of environments.”

Herbalist to lead foraging walk

TURNERS FALLS — Join herbalist Laura Torraco, owner of Sage Green Botanicals, for a downtown foraging walk on Sunday, June 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. starting from the Great Falls Discovery Center’s main entrance.

Attendees ages 12 and up are invited to discover plant identification tips, medicinal and material uses, and histories of the plants that are local.

Participants should bring water and wear sturdy shoes.

Talamana Duo performing June 14

TURNERS FALLS — Talamana Duo will perform at the Great Falls Discovery Center, 2 Avenue A, on Friday, June 14, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The duo’s name comes from a Sanskrit word denoting cosmic order and rhythm. Performers are Jim Matus on laoutar (a lute/guitar hybrid) and back-up vocals, whose compositions are grounded in the distinctly American voice of jazz and fusion music; and Laila Salins on vocals and shruti, who brings her Eastern European sensibility and her immersion in contemporary chamber music.

Together they perform original songs, incorporating jazz and folk music with elements of Indian and Middle Eastern music, based on lyrics of poets ranging from William Blake and Emily Dickinson to contemporary poets. Their debut recording, “Cloud Call,” was released in August 2023.

There is a suggested sliding-scale donation of $6 to $15, though children will be admitted for free. Donations help the Friends of the Great Falls Discovery Center provide free nature programming for the public. Coffee, tea and homemade baked refreshments will also be available.

French/Breton jam session on June 16

TURNERS FALLS — An informal group of musicians will gather at the Great Falls Discovery Center on Sunday, June 16, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. for a jam session to play traditional dance music from France and Brittany, known as bal folk.
