This month, Janel Nockleby of the Great Falls Discovery Center will teach a class on making “paper quilts,” with a theme of local waterways. The Brick House asks for registration in advance by contacting Stacey Langknecht at 413-800-2496 or slangknecht@brickhousecommunity.org by Tuesday, July 23.
TURNERS FALLS — The Connecticut River Defenders advocacy group will hold a rally to protest the relicensing of FirstLight Hydro Generating Co.’s Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Project on Friday, July 19, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on the Turners Falls-Gill Bridge.
FirstLight, which previously submitted its application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a new license to operate, has three facilities up for relicensing. Environmental advocacy groups have criticized those facilities — the hydro-pump facility at Northfield Mountain and two hydroelectric dams in Turners Falls — for their impact on fish, the Connecticut River and the surrounding environment.
