GREENFIELD — Operations are being consolidated as McGovern Automotive Group sells its two local dealerships.

The Federal Street sale showroom has been consolidated to McGovern Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram at 39 Beacon St., which, along with McGovern Chevrolet at 54 Main St. and the house behind it, are expected to be sold to Alex Castergini, of Bozrah, Connecticut, within the next 30 days.

“I got a phone call from [McGovern Automotive Group President] Matt McGovern to ask me if I was interested” in buying the stores, Castergini said.

According to Castergini, the stores will be renamed Greenfield Chevrolet and Greenfield Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram.

Castergini, 48, is a member of the Swanzey, New Hampshire-based Maverick Motor Group and is part-owner of five of the group’s eight dealerships. However, the Greenfield acquisitions will not be owned under that business umbrella. Castergini also runs the day-to-day operations at Cargill Chevrolet in Putnam, Connecticut.

“Greenfield’s a very similar market from Putnam,” he said when asked what prompted him to want to buy the Franklin County properties. “I will be [in Greenfield] pretty much every other day.”

Castergini said he is not purchasing the empty lot that McGovern Automotive Group wants to sell on the Mohawk Trail, near the Interstate 91 rotary. He mentioned he intends to retain McGovern’s roughly 50 employees.

“Our intention and our hope is that everybody stays,” Castergini said.

McGovern Chevrolet of Greenfield had been Dillon Chevrolet for 60 years until an ownership change in February 2022. Brothers Jay Dillon and Tom Dillon Jr. inherited the dealership from their father in 1998. The sale was under contract in late 2021, pending General Motors’ approval of the buyer.

McGovern Automotive Group, based near Boston, has dealerships located across Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York. The 2022 acquisition of Dillon Chevrolet marked the company’s first dealership in western Massachusetts.

As for the recent consolidation of Greenfield locations, Scott Webber, general manager of both the McGovern Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram and McGovern Chevrolet stores in Greenfield for the past two years, said the change will make shopping for a vehicle easier for customers, with sales and service in the same building.

“It’s too confusing with two locations,” he said, referencing the Federal Street and Beacon Street properties.

McGovern had leased the Federal Street space from Lundgren Honda but that agreement expired on Jan. 1.

The 399 Federal St. lot that was once the site of dozens of vehicles now sits empty.

When discussing the anticipated sale, Webber mentioned Matt McGovern lives in Boston and the company is based in Newton.

“He’s still got [at least] 29 stores and it’s growing,” Webber explained. “He’s just not in the Greenfield market [anymore].”

Webber said 2024 was not as strong a year for auto sales as 2023, but could not comment on how much of a factor that was in McGovern’s decision to sell.
