Danielle Miller: Is the Recorder anti-Christmas?

In the Nov. 28 edition of the Greenfield Recorder, there was an article in the Arts & Culture section titled “A celebration for those who hate the holidays.” I’m sure there are many people who don’t like the Christmas season, but was it really necessary for this paper to promote an “anti-holiday spectacular” concert “filled with profanity, irreverence and just plain bad behavior?” I will not be purchasing Erin McKeown’s “F That!” albums any time soon.

Then this paper promoted a ‘Home for the Holi-gays’ concert at the Shea Theater (Dec. 5). Some consider drag shows family entertainment, but I believe they are inappropriate for children (and I’d like to think most adults would rather do something else than watch men parade around in women’s clothing).

And in the Recorder’s Christmas Eve edition, there were no front-page stories on the true meaning of Christmas. But there was a front-page story on Trump and how mass deportations could affect people who are here illegally. That Trump, what a meanie! I’d get in big trouble if I broke the law; so why are illegal immigrants allowed to stay here and be rewarded with free food and hotel rooms? They’re treated better, much better, than our veterans. In 2016 Donald Trump said, “We have to take care of our vets, and in many cases, illegal immigrants are taken better care of by this country than our vets, and that’s not going to happen.”
