Tim Tolg: Malfunctioning library door raises questions

I use our library often. Over the last week or two the side door, sliding and “automatic” and presumably controlled by a computer has been closed due to a malfunctioning part. The front door is open but also of the same type as the side, now inoperative, door. Hmmm.

What would happen if while waiting for the part for the side door the front sliding door also had a malfunction? I asked a couple of staff members and at first they thought I was joking. I assured them that I was not joking. They had no answer to this simple, and quite possible, situation. Hmmm.

Now it’s a bit late for our library, but wouldn’t it have made sense to also have had an old-fashioned door, wide enough for wheelchairs, to be available in such an emergency? Future libraries should have some kind of override.

The same argument could be made for car windows which are controlled by a car computer. This lack of foresight is regrettable.
