I wish to add my voice to those who are thankful for Jack Hornor’s letter, “Trump Backers aren’t somehow ‘less than’” [Recorder, Feb. 1]. I appreciate his observations and admire his courage to print them. Like the writer, I often found myself dismayed by messages I have seen on social media. It seems that many people feel it is perfectly permissible to ridicule those whose political views differ from theirs. People across the political spectrum think themselves clever when devising new ways to poke fun at others. Nothing good can come of this behavior. We cannot build bridges, come to consensus, or have any sort of meaningful dialog if the practice of looking at others with condescension and ridicule continues.

Please take the time to look beyond the political beliefs of others and try to see the world from their point of view. Borrowing a quote from Ted Lasso, don’t be judgmental, be curious. Look below the surface to discover the common humanity that we all share and that we all need to tend to.
