The benefits of heat pumps

I read with interest the article about the challenges facing widespread adoption of heat pumps in Massachusetts (“Heat pumps slow to gain traction,” Recorder, Jan 8). Misinformation about heat-pump technology and flaws in the MassSAVE program are real, but they are being addressed through better information and better training. Those efforts, as well as reforms to the MassSAVE program, will continue, and the process will get easier.

I installed a whole-house heat pump system in my home last year. I solicited five bids and learned about heat pumps from each installer. I didn’t need to personally research all of the complex issues that Loie Hayes of Green Energy Consumers listed. What I needed was a contractor who could answer my questions and explain the system to a consumer. The contractor I chose did an excellent job with the explanation and the installation, and also helped me navigate the rebate process. My final cost was slightly over the maximum whole-house rebate, and the balance was wrapped into a zero-interest loan through MassSAVE.

My house was comfortable last winter and the cooling function was welcome on the few days that I needed it this past summer. By using heat pumps, I was able to greatly decrease my house’s carbon emissions. To me, that was by far the most important benefit of all.
