Karen K. Davis: Horrified by dismantling of federal government, workforce

I am horrified that President Donald Trump may slash the Social Security Administration’s workforce by up to 50%; especially after he campaigned on the promise to not touch Social Security. This will severely limit the SSA’s ability to administer retirement and disability benefits to 72.5 million people.

In addition, the federal government is closing hundreds of local and regional offices, which directly impacts people of low income, in rural areas, people with disabilities, those who have low literacy, or don’t have access to or skills with computers.

The SSA has not missed a payment in 80 years, according to ProPublica investigations.

Martin O’Malley, a former SSA commissioner believes this could “lead to a total system collapse.” And if that happens the present government may privatize this whole system, which would mean greed and the need for profits would be the main concern instead of a mission to support people.

If you feel as horrified as I do, I hope you will write an email or call our representative, Jim McGovern, or our Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey.

We have to stand up for each other — this is our democracy and people like Elon Musk, who is not elected and has not been legally appointed, are slashing budgets and destroying programs that were put in place by bipartisan administrations to support programs for people with disabilities, the elderly, farmers, education and health, and many more.

Its time for us to stand up and say no more help for billionaires (tax cuts) and stop destroying our country and our democracy.
