HS Roundup: Athol boys basketball clinches share of Hampshire League North title following 51-42 win over Smith Academy

The Hampshire League North title came down to the wire this winter.
The Athol boys basketball team entered Tuesday’s contest against Smith Academy likely needing a win to clinch at least a share of the Hampshire League North championship and the Bears did just that, pulling out a 51-42 road victory in Hatfield.
With Lee beating Franklin Tech, 69-39, the Wildcats and Athol will share the HL North crown as each finished with 10-2 records in the league.
“This was a great win for us,” Bear coach Brian Patria said. “Our Defense saved the day with ball pressure and denial on their best shooters. Ethan Goodwin really made his presence known in the paint. I’m super proud of our effort tonight. We earned it, we earned a share of the league title but we all keep on saying ‘we ain’t done yet.’”
Ethan Goodwin scored 18 points, Ben Kearney recorded 14 points, Ethan Bacigalupo tossed in eight points, Logan Cormier scored six poitns while Aaron Ouellet added five points in the victory.
Pioneer 70, Frontier 51 — The Panthers closed out their season with an unbeaten 18-0 record following a Hampshire League South victory over the Redhawks at Messer Gymnasium Tuesday.
Pioneer led 41-22 at the half and 64-38 going into the fourth.
Kurt Redeker led the way with 25 points and four rebounds, Brayden Thayer tallied 19 points and four assists, Alex McClelland finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, Ben Werner scored seven points while Will Glazier added five points in the winning effort.

Greenfield 67, Lenox 55 — The Green Wave closed their regular season on a high note, as freshman Grayson Thomas went off for 30 points to lift Greenfield to a Hampshire League South victory on the road Tuesday.
The Wave trailed 28-26 at the half but pulled ahead 46-39 going into the fourth.
Jon Breor tallied 15 points, Caleb Thomas scored 11 points while Caleb Murray added eight points in the victory.
McCann Tech 55, Turners 44 — The Hornets led 30-16 at the half and 45-25 going into the fourth to defeat the visiting Thunder in North Adams on Tuesday.
Freilyn Abarua scored 16 points, Jackson Cogswell tallied 10 points, Alex Quezada scored eight points and David Klempner added four points for Turners.
Four Rivers 61, White Oak 43 — Meir Dragon and Henry Schwerin each scored 12 points while Eliot Sanbord added six points as the Otters advanced to the River Valley Athletic League championship game with a victory on Tuesday.
Four Rivers will host Hartsbrook in the title game on Thursday, with tip set for 5:30 p.m.
Athol 34, PVCICS 26 — The Bears are officially in the win column.
Athol built a 24-12 lead at the half, extended their advantage to 32-17 going into the fourth before earning a 34-26 independent victory at Mallet Gymnasium on Tuesday for its first win of the season.
Abigayle Spooner finished with 11 points, Madi Hermes scored eight points, Allison Robertson recorded five points while Ella Reed and Jaylah Taylor each added four points for the Bears.
Smith Vocational 50, Mohawk Trail 32 — The Vikings outscored the Warriors 22-9 in the third quarter to pull away with a victory in Northampton on Tuesday.
Bella Pettengill scored 10 points, Bella Brown tallied eight points while Natalie Lanoue and Zephyr Jetzon each added six points for Mohawk Trail.
Girls basketball
Greenfield 45, Mahar 28 — Anna Bucala drilled three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 14 points as the Green Wave ran past the Senators for a Franklin County League North win on Monday in Greenfield.
Tayler Bergeron dropped 13 points for Greenfield.
Mahar’s Thea Whitmore paced the visitors with nine points, and Taylor Paluk followed with eight.
Mohawk Trail 32, Pioneer 30 — The Warriors outscored the Panthers 13-4 in the fourth quarter to pull out a comeback victory in Buckland on Monday.
The win is the fourth in a row for Mohawk Trail.
Bella Pettengill finished with 18 points, Natalie Lanoue scored six points, Monique Hadley recorded four points while Emmalee Inman added two points in the win for the Warriors.
Maggie Tsipenyuk scored 12 points to go along with six rebounds, Natalie Rios tallied eight points and six rebounds, Kyler McClelland had five points and five rebounds while Charley Harrington hit a 3-pointer in the loss.
Boys basketball
Mahar 57, Chicopee 44 — Marshall Ames had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Derek Collins also recorded a double-double of 14 points and 12 boards to lift the Senators to a come-from-behind win on Monday in Orange.
Morgan Softic scored nine points to go with five rebounds and six assists, and Jayden Delgado tossed in 14 points for Mahar.
