Greenfield coach Adam Bouchard says he’s most proud when one of his players is selected for the Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Award.

For the third consecutive year, a Green Wave player was selected.

Eathon Bryant won the award in 2023 while Hunter Smith was selected in 2024 and this year, Greenfield defenseman Will Petrin was the recipient of the award for the Berry Division.

“It’s tremendous he won this award,” Bouchard said. “We’re fortunate to have a lot of award winners and we take great pride in this one. It’s our favorite award. It’s not only selected by coaches but by western Mass. hockey and the MIAA. Nobody deserves it more than William Petrin.”

To be nominated for the Sportsmanship Award, the MIAA says the player must “show an exemplary record of complying, both in spirit and letter, with all league and MIAA rules and regulations during the season; a demonstrated record of respectfully accepting the rulings of game officials; a record of conduct on and off the ice that brings honor to self, team, school, and community; a commitment to teamwork by providing all members with recognition of their talents, an opportunity to contribute them to the team, and a spirit of camaraderie and demonstrated respect for opponents before, during and after games.”

To Bouchard, Petrin — a senior at Frontier — was more than fitting to win the award based on that description, noting how hard he works both on and off the ice.

“When you look at him as a person, it doesn’t matter if it’s a practice, a game, in the classroom or in the community, he competes at the highest level all the time,” Bouchard said. “When you look back at this season he earned himself a top four defensive role. He played an immense amount of minutes his senior year and worked to get some time on the penalty kill. Despite playing all those minutes he only took three penalties himself this year.”

Petrin’s story with the Green Wave is all about hard work and perseverance.

He started playing on JV his freshman year and split time between JV and varsity his sophomore and junior years. Through hard work, he was able to carve out a role his senior year and help Greenfield take home a Berry Division regular season title as well as reach the Western Mass. Class A championship game.

While a hard worker on the ice, Petrin consistently played within the rules of the game according to Bouchard.

“William competes hard but also composes himself to play within the rules and confines of the game,” Bouchard said. “Whenever a teammate makes the right play, Will is always there to congratulate them. He is also the first teammate there when someone makes a mistake and they need to be lifted up. From a coaches point of view, it is really great to see a student-athlete understand that this is much bigger than just a game.”

Petrin doesn’t just get the job done on the ice. He’s a strong student who has been accepted into each school to which he’s applied. Planning to major in mechanical engineering, Bouchard said Petrin will find success in whatever he chooses to do in the next chapter to his life.

“I’m proud to have been part of his journey,” Bouchard said. “He does a tremendous amount of things outside the rink. That’s a big part of him winning this award. He has a high GPA, he’s active in the community. The Green Wave program is very happy and proud to have a guy like him be the recipient of this award. It goes to show that if you do things the Green Wave way, good things happen.”

Petrin and the other recipients of the award were honored during Monday’s Boston Bruins game against the Buffalo Sabres at TD Garden.
