TURNERS FALLS — Members of Four Rivers Charter Public School’s Drama Club are putting their set design skills to the test this year by opting to perform an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic pirate adventure story “Treasure Island.”

Two evening performances will be held at the Shea Theater Arts Center on Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1, at 7 p.m., marking the culmination of months of work. A matinee show will also be offered at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Drama Club, led by Director Leah Plath, puts on a show once a year, alternating between a play and a musical. According to Plath, this year the club chose between three shows: “You Can’t Take It with You,” “Radium Girls” and “Treasure Island.” The third option proved to be the most popular among students.

On a stormy night, main character Jim Hawkins opens the door to find a terrifying stranger. At the old sailor’s feet sits a huge chest. Jim invites the sailor in — and a dangerous voyage filled with murder, money and mutiny begins.

Four Rivers’ Drama Club strives to be an inclusive space for students looking to participate in school activities during the winter when sports teams have entered their off-seasons. Any student who wants to take part is able to, regardless of whether they are cast in the show.

“Everyone can participate in the show,” Plath said. “We try to make sure that everyone who wants to be in the show can be, even if they don’t have a speaking role.”

Production began after auditions were held in the second week of November. The group rehearses twice a week, with the exception of school breaks and the week leading up to opening night.

Sophomore Adeline Mayo, who is playing the role of Jim Hawkins in the production, was not expecting to be cast as the lead when she auditioned.

“I was expecting another person to get it,” Mayo said. “I was extremely excited.”

Setting apart the production of “Treasure Island” from shows the Drama Club has put on in the past is the elaborate set design. This year, organizers are setting up a multi-level sailing ship built by Four Rivers parent Serena Torrey, who has worked in the past as a carpenter. The sets, including the ship, rock walls and other pieces, were painted by Four Rivers students as part of their Wednesday extracurricular schedule.

Rhea Sawicki, a senior at Four Rivers who is playing Israel Hands, is playing her role entirely in Spanish. After living in Mexico for five months and taking Advanced Spanish at school, she feels confident that she will succeed at shaping the character’s identity in her second language.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Sawicki said. “It allows me to have a lot of freedom with the character because no one else understands what she is saying.”

The Drama Club has provided a positive experience in the students’ high school years, with participants speaking highly of the community they have formed. Cedar Skinder, a senior playing Squire Trelawney in “Treasure Island,” said theater has given her a positive way to spend her time.

“You build an awesome community,” she said. “It comes at a time when everything is snowy and dark, and you get to fill your time with something fun and positive.”

Tickets for the show are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Children under 5 years old will be admitted for free. Tickets can be purchased online at bit.ly/FRDrama25.
