WESTFIELD — The man who died in a workplace accident in Greenfield late last month will be remembered by loved ones on Saturday during a celebration of life.
Matthew P. Nedorostek, 65, died on Jan. 24 after falling into a sand-filled silo at a worksite off Cleveland Street that Chicopee Concrete Service uses to mix dry ingredients for cement. His body was recovered after a nearly eight-hour rescue and recovery effort by more than 50 police and firefighters.
Messages posted to Legacy.com, a commercial provider of online memorials, have expressed shock and condolences to Nedorostek’s family, particularly his wife, Kim, who his obituary named as his “little one” and “peanut.”
“There are no words that I can come up with to even begin to tell you how sorry I am [to hear about] this. I am heartbroken for you and your family,” Krista Raymond wrote in part on Jan. 31. “We were lucky to have him. He had a wonderful smile. I’m so sorry. Rest in peace Matt.”
The obituary states Nedorostek worked for Chicopee Concrete Service for the past 34 years. A comment from Joe Salvon at John S. Lane & Son Inc. in Westfield stated it was “always a pleasure to be in his company.”
Joseph S. Rae posted a peace lily to the page. While Rae said he did not know Nedorostek, Rae owns a utility contracting company that volunteered a vacuum truck and four or five employees to assist in recovering Nedorostek from the sand-filled silo.
The obituary states Nedorostek is survived by his brother, Mark, and Mark’s wife, Lorna; his sister, Maggie, and her husband, Paul; his brother, Shawn; and Kim’s family, including her parents Britt and Terry, siblings Kent, Christine and Charlie, and their respective families, along with many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life and healing at Shaker Farms Country Club at 866 Shaker Road at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8. A prayer service will be held, followed by a time to share stories of Nedorostek.
