Weather made for an adventurous opening day at the 43rd Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship, where a pack of local golfers competed in the event at The Club at New Seabury in Mashpee.

A weather delay in the morning pushed play back a bit, but most of the 192 teams still made their way through Wednesday’s opening round of the two-day event.

The tournament is played on two courses at New Seabury — the Ocean course (par 72) and Dunes (par 70).

Crumpin-Fox Club’s Justin Dion and Keith Burch paced the local contingent. The pair tore up the Dunes course, though they didn’t finish their round as it was suspended due to darkness. Dion and Burch were 6-under through 15 holes, good for a share of fifth place.

They stormed out of the gates at 4-under on the front nine, then added two more birdies on the back to set themselves up nicely entering Thursday’s conclusion of the first round. They’ll then play the second round on the Ocean course.

Crumpin-Fox Club’s Mark Waskiewicz and Troy Miller were in red numbers after Day 1, as the pair carded a 1-under 71 on the Ocean course to finish in a tie for 59th. The pair birdied four holes on their round, and will play Dunes on Thursday.

Country Club of Greenfield’s Cody Booska and Andy Lesenski shot a 1-over 71 at Dunes to finish in a tie for 105th. The pair recorded three birdies and four bogeys on their round.

CCG’s Jason Kelton and  CFC’s Dave Donoghue teamed for an opening-round 73, also 1-over  as they played the Ocean course, and a tie for 105th.

TPC Boston’s Tim Stundis and The Links at Mass Golf’s Chris Congdon blitzed the field  with a 10-under 60 on the Dunes course to lead by three shots.

The second and final round is Thursday with teams playing the opposite course of their opening round.

Descavich 8, Triton Automotive 4 – Sammi Suhl went 2-for-3 and had five strikeouts in the circle for Descavich, while Leah Batiste doubled and Alaina Toothaker had two hits in the win on Wednesday.

Triton’s Clara Behan went 3-for-4 with a double, Tianna Moise-Valdez also doubled and Lindsey Hawkins roped two singles.

Camelot Carpet Cleaners 5, Pristine Orientals 1 – In Junior Division action Wednesday, Brady Deane was 4-for-4 and Charley Deane scored a run for Camelot.

Pristine Orientals' Hailey Sadler and Hayden Sadler each had two hits.

Gilmore & Farrell 17, Precision Driving School 7 — Rian Farrell roped a two-run home  run in the first inning, and struck out eigh t in five innings in the circle for G & F. Kamryn Beck, Ivy Bettencourt and Hannah Lunt each contributed hits at the plate.

Addison Martin, Raven Ziff, and Allie Richard all contributed hits for Precision. 

Tri-County League

Northfield Cougars 16, West River 2 – Ryleigh Goodwin struck out five in two scoreless innings for the Cougars, while Evy Lewis struck out three in the third en route to the win on Wednesday.

The Cougars racked up 25 hits on the night, led by three from Janessa Sadler (two RBIs) and two from Evy Lewis (single, double, three RBIs).

West River’s Ella Crockett had a hit and an RBI, while Madeline Perkins and Emily Nystrom each recorded a strikeout.

Pipione’s 13, Booska’s 0 – Liam Kerivan tossed a shutout with 14 strikeouts to pace Pipione’s on Wednesday night. Spencer Towne (three hits, two RBIs) keyed the offense while Gabe and Ava Barber each had multiple hits in the win.

Booska’s Julian Bowden-Smith collected a hit and Asa Stebbins had a unassisted double play at first base.

Smitty's 7, Denny's 6 – Asa Bouchard had two hits and scored three runs for Smitty’s, while JJ Bones, Preston Charboneau, Topher Miller and Jacob Miller all had a hit in the victory.

Ryan Turner (hit, RBI) and Benny Shivone (two runs) paced Denny’s.

Freedom Credit Union 9, Gruber and Tripp 6 — Owen Little played well defensively at first base and at the plate, and Malachai Hickey had three hits for Freedom Credit Union on Tuesday.

Gruber and Tripp’s Jasper Bielunus had two hits, with excellent defense from teammate EJ Morley.

Baker Financial Group 17, Fitzgerald Real Estate 10 — Crosby Cairney (three hits) and Jayce Chippa (three hits, 2B) paced Baker on Tuesday, while Zack Bensen and Cody Castine each struck out three batters in the win.

Fitzgerald’s Zelda Rossi and Abram Walker singled, while Liam Grant and Aiden Martin pitched well.

Liberty Tax Sharks 24, Farmers United 6 – Matt Gibson smacked a home run and triple as part of a three-hit, six-RBI outing to lift the Liberty Tax Sharks to a win on Wednesday.

The Sharks were also led by Che Christi (2H, 3 RBIs), Heather Gibson (3H, 2 RBIs), Marcy Conway (3H), Matt Cutter (3H, HR), and Kyle Conway (3H, 3 RBIs).

Farmers United received two hits apiece from Charlotte Freeman and Dennis DePaolo.

Wednesday’s Deerfield Academy results: Boys lacrosse beat Kent, 20-4, while girls lacrosse beat Kimball Union, 18-11. 

Girls tennis scored a 5-4 win over NMH, while boys tennis fell to Hotchkiss, 4-2. Girls water polo took a 12-6 win over Hamden Hall, while golf beat Choate (188-199) and ultimate beat MacDuffie, 9-3. The Big Green baseball team dropped a 1-0 decision to Westminster at Dunkin’ Park in Hartford, Conn.
