TURNERS FALLS — Police and firefighters blocked off a portion of the road at the Walgreens plaza on Avenue A Monday evening after an individual called the pharmacy to report a bomb, according to Turners Falls Fire Capt. Michael Currie.

“This is an active scene for a bomb threat that was called into the Walgreens facility,” Currie said at approximately 7:30 p.m. “We’re just trying to keep people at a safe evacuation zone.”

The Turners Falls Fire Department responded alongside police from Montague, Greenfield and Massachusetts State Police. K-9 units patrolled the plaza parking lot.

Walgreens Pharmacy Technician Nikki Giard, whose husband works as a grocery manager at Food City, said that at approximately 6:20 p.m., a man called the pharmacy, described the clothing and hairstyles her coworkers were wearing, and warned that there was a pipe bomb somewhere in the store.

“They all evacuated, as far as I know, as quick as they could,” Giard recounted. “Then everybody in all of the rest of the stores were evacuated shortly after.”

In an interview Tuesday, Turners Falls Fire Chief Todd Brunelle said the State Police Bomb Squad found no traces of explosives following a thorough K-9 search. All emergency personnel had been cleared from the plaza by approximately 8:45 p.m.

Montague Police Detective Sgt. Joshua Hoffman, in an interview Tuesday, said that while the incident is still under investigation, no suspects have been identified yet.
