GREENFIELD — No one was injured after a 1973 Toyota caught fire in the woods at 303 Hope St. on Tuesday afternoon.

Flames rose above the vehicle as the Greenfield Police and Fire departments arrived. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in a moment’s time.

The vehicle’s owner, Greenfield resident Todd Howe, said he and fellow resident Jeremiah Willard were working to clear a road in the woods when they heard a “pop” come from the engine. Howe said he was preparing to scrap the vehicle before the incident occurred.

“It just, all of a sudden, went up in flames on each side,” Howe said. “We grabbed the gas tank and got out of there.”

Willard described the initial combustion as a small “fireball” that made a popping sound as he and Howe were moving the vehicle down a hill onto the street.

Greenfield Fire Capt. Peter McIver said although firefighters are investigating the cause, there was “nothing suspicious” about the fire.
