NORTHFIELD — Heading into the final minute of the game between the Greenfield and Pioneer girls soccer teams, neither the Green Wave nor the Panthers were able to separate from one another.

While the game scoreless in the 79th minute, Pioneer found a way to produce a touch of magic.

Panther Dani Teaca dribbled the ball to the midfield stripe and sent a pass up to Maddie Keefe. The freshman got a good touch, took a dribble and blasted a shot from outside the box that soared into the goal to give Pioneer the lead, one that stood to the final whistle as the Panthers pulled out a 1-0 Bi-County League victory on Thursday.

“I touched it out and took it with my left foot,” Keefe said. “It felt good to beat a team that has been destroying everyone.”

The loss is the first of the season for Greenfield (3-1), which had defeated its first three opponents by a combined score 19-5.

“It was a good game all the way through until we let up the goal late,” Green Wave coach Ben Johnson said. “It was two evenly matched teams. It just came down to one shot. It’s always good to have these early in the season. There’s still plenty of season to go. Now, we just need to focus and see where we need to improve.”

While Pioneer (2-1-1) was thrilled to take the lead, it had to lock in after. Greenfield’s Elderina Cecunjanin produced a pair of chances late, but Panther Kyler McClelland — who finished with six saves — was there on the spot to make the stop each time to preserve the shutout.

“It boosted our energy,” Pioneer sophomore Leah Potter said. “Then we had to settle in, lock in and be ready for the next play. It wasn’t an easy game. We were getting some good through balls and the build up was really there. I thought if Maddie gets one, we can win.”
