HS Roundup: Franklin Tech’s Gabe Mota qualifies for states at MIAA D3 West Golf Tournament

The Pioneer and Franklin Tech golf teams traveled out to Wahconah Country Club on Tuesday for the MIAA D3 West Sectional Tournament, with one Eagle golfer qualifying for Monday’s state tournament at The Haven Country Club in Boylston.
Franklin Tech’s Gabe Mota shot a 7-over 78, which placed him in a tie for third on the day. With the top five finishers earning automatic spots to states, that finish locked a spot up for Mota.
It was Pioneer who ended up having the better team finish, placing third with a score of 82-over after tallying up its top four scorers. Franklin Tech placed fourth (83-over). Monty Tech (42-over) and Lenox (68-over) had the top two team finishes to advance to states.
Monty Tech’s Ryan Hebert was the individual winner with a 3-over 74 followed by Lee’s Joe Abderhalden with a 6-over 77.
Ben Werner (85), Brayden Thayer (91), Ethan Mauthe (92) and Chayton Massa (98) scored for the Panthers while Cam Curtis (101) and Carter Gerry (106) also competed for Pioneer.
Grady Deery (92), Jack Day (94) and Braeden Talbot (103) also scored for Franklin Tech, with Will Belval (107) and Ayron Hemingway (120) also competing.
Athol’s Ethan Heuer qualified as an individual on Tuesday and placed 14th overall with a score of 88.
Mohawk Trail 3, Greenfield 0 — The Northern League crown is headed to Buckland.

Turners 3, Pioneer 0 — The Thunder came to play in Northfield Tuesday, rolling to a 25-6, 25-8, 25-9 victory over the Panthers.
Madi Liimatainen put down 13 kills and 15 aces to go along with four digs, Tatianna Carr Williams had five kills, one ace and two digs, Janelle Massey tallied five kills and three aces while Maddie Dietz finished with three aces and 14 assists for Turners.
South Hadley 3, Athol 1 — Gianna Vaillancourt had six kills, seven assists, seven aces and seven digs while Olivia Mayer recorded six kills and two aces in the Bears’ 21-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-19 loss to the Tigers at Mallet Gymnasium Tuesday.
Evelyn Robinson tallied two kills, four aces and four digs while Abby Spooner had two kills and five digs for Athol. Athol JV lost, 2-1.
Frontier 15, Greenfield 50
Frontier 15, Smith Vocational 50 — Sylvie DiBartolomeo was the winner with a time of 17 minutes, 40 seconds while the Redhawks had the top six finishers to earn a pair of wins over the Wave and the Vikings on Tuesday in South Deerfield.
The pair of wins helped Frontier close out a 13-0 regular season campaign, one that saw it go 8-0 in Pioneer League North meets to take the league championship. It’s the second year in a row the Redhawks were unbeaten in league meets.
Liv Christensen placed second (18:43) followed by Phoebe Radner (19:12), Maia Christensen (19:29), Perla Ordaz (19:32) and Maddie Antes (19:35) for Frontier while Sasha Malo (eighth, 19:46), Kali Beam (ninth, 20:27) and Mary Burt (10th, 20:55) also earned top 10 finishes for the Redhawks.
Greenfield’s Alice Fortin took 12th (21:24) while Rosie Fortin took 16th (22:51).

Frontier 15, Smith Vocational 48
Greenfield 19, Smith Vocational 42 — Redhawk Luke Howard placed first (15:26) followed by teammates Evan Hedlund (15:27), Charlie Dennis (15:28) and Oliver Brown (15:43), helping Frontier secure a pair of wins in South Deerfield Tuesday.
Hengxi Yue (eighth, 17:10) and Adam Paul (ninth, 17:15) also placed in the top 10 for the Redhawks.
Dylan Breiwick led the Green Wave, finishing fifth (15:51) to help Greenfield pick up a win against the Vikings. Alex Scotera (sixth, 16:28) and Mason Youmell (seventh, 16:28) also placed in the top 10 for the Wave.

Mohawk Trail 16, Pope Francis 41 — Mohawk Trail’s Peter Healy (15:48), Aymeric Loucka (15:51) , Carson Richardson (15:53) and Rex Kuoppala (16:01) were the first four runners to cross the finish line in at the Whiting Resovoir Tuesday, allowing the Warriors to earn a win over the Senators.
Leo Boltz (18:01) finished in eight place for Mohawk Trail. Michael LaPlante placed 21st while Solomon Burke took 22nd for Mahar.
Athol 3, Mahar 0 — Alauna Choquette scored off a corner kick sent in by her sister, Aliyah Choquette, just 30 seconds into the contest, helping propel the Bears to a victory over rival Mahar in Athol Tuesday.
Hnnah Cordosa scored midway through the first half before Arianna Lopez-Hippler closed out the scoring off a dish from Aliyah Choquette in the second half for Athol. Ava Adams made 11 saves in the win.
Four Rivers 6, Stoneleigh-Burnham 0 — Aida Potter scored twice while Indira Wiles, Penelope Peters (assist), Olivia Long and Emma Horton-Woods also found the back of the net in Four Rivers’ victory Tuesday.
Long and Wiles each played a half in goal and combine for five saves in the win.
Mohawk Trail 1, Hampshire 1 — Avery Johnston scored an unassisted goal for the Warriors, who tied with the Raiders on Tuesday in Buckland.
Belchertown 3, Franklin Tech 1 — Hannah Gilbert scored the Eagles lone goal in a loss to the Orioles in Turners Tuesday
Madison Markwell made 14 saves for Franklin Tech.
Greenfield 3, Northampton 1 — Henley Gilstrap scored a goal and dished an assist while McKenzie Boswell and Payton Martin also scored as the Wave picked up an independent victory at Donna Woodcock Field Tuesday.
Riley Thayer added an assist while Kayden Viencek made two saves for the Wave. Greenfield had a 12-7 corner advantage.
Gateway 2, Greenfield 0 — Josiah Novik and Jackson Renaud scored for the Gators to defeat the Green Wave in Greenfield Tuesday.
Caleb Thomas made 13 saves for Greenfield.

Franklin Tech 2, Duggan 2 — The Eagles scored twice in the second half to earn a tie against Duggan in Springfield Monday.
John Georghitha scored on a corner kick sent in by Mason Thurston while Cody Yetter tallied off an assist from Carter Leete. It was Leete’s first car eer varsity point.

Franklin Tech 2, Smith Academy 1 — Mia Marigliano scored in each half to lift the Eagles past the Falcons in Turners Monday.
Alyssa Peters had the assist in the first half before Mady Lynde tallied the assist in the s econd half. Kylee Gamache made eight saves in the win.
