HS Roundup: Franklin Tech’s Gabe Mota finishes in a tie for 24th at MIAA Div. 3 State Golf Tournament

Franklin Tech’s Gabe Mota was the lone Recorder area golfer to qualify for the MIAA Division 3 Golf Championships on Tuesday. 

Competing at Foxborough Country Club, Mota shot a 15-over 87 on the par-72 course. That score placed him in a tie for 24th place overall. 

Ayer Shirley’s Reid Ohanesian was the individual winner after shooting a 3-over 75, helping Ayer Shirley capture the team title as well with a score of 43-over. 

Volleyball

Class C

No. 5 Franklin Tech 3, No. 4 SICS 0 — The Eagles went to Springfield and pulled out a 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 sweep over the Bulldogs to advance to the Class C semifinals. 

Maddie Pettengill put down five kills to go along with five digs, Shelby O’Leary recorded two aces, one kill, five digs and 11 assists, Emma Petersen had two aces, six kills, 13 digs, one assist and three blocks while Lily Baldwin finished with two kills, four digs and one block in the victory. 

Franklin Tech will take on top-seeded Mount Greylock in the semis Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Williamstown. The Mounties are coming off a 3-0 sweep of eighth-seeded Greenfield Monday.

Pittsfield 3, Athol 0 — Eight kills from Giana Vaillancourt led the way for the Bears, which fell in a non-playoff contest against Pittsfield on Monday.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-19, 25-22. Abby Spooner added five kills for Athol, while Olivia Mayer put down five aces and Ella Reed chipped in with six assists.

Boys soccer

Hopkins 2, Greenfield 1 — Clivens Carter Michel’s late goal had the Green Wave within striking distance, but Greenfield couldn’t find the equalizer in a 2-1 loss in Hadley on Monday.

Trailing 2-0, Carter Michel struck with an assist from Nathan Gheorghita in the 74th minute. Caleb Thomas made 12 saves in net for Greenfield.

Smith Academy 9, Mahar 1 – Mathieu Soucy scored the lone goal for the Senators on a penalty kick in the 76th minute during action Monday in Hatfield.

Jack Brady’s hat trick paced the host Falcons. Three Mahar goalies combined to make 10 saves in net.

Girls soccer

Athol 2, Pioneer 1 — The Bears locked up the outright Bi-County League title on Monday in Northfield, notching a 2-1 victory to close out their regular season in style.

Athol improved to 13-1-1 overall, and finished its league campaign at 11-1. The club now waits to find out if it qualified for the Western Mass. Class C tournament, with brackets set to be released later in the week.

Pioneer (7-4-2) was led by Jaelyn Boliski’s goal, and keeper Kyler McClelland made seven saves in net.

Greenfield 1, Franklin Tech 0 — Elderina Cucunjanin scored on a direct kick 15 minutes into the second half, propelling the Green Wave to a victory Monday. 

Annie Cobileanschi made five saves for Greenfield while Kylee Gamache stopped 10 shots for Franklin Tech. 

Field hockey

Greenfield 3, Amherst 0 — Goals from Madi Lemay, McKenzie Boswell and Henley Gilstrap led the Wave to an independent victory over the Hurricanes at Donna Woodcock  Field on Monday. 

Gilstrap and Riley Thayer p rovided the assists while Kayden Viencek made four saves for Greenfield, which led 1-0 into the fourth quarter before striking for a pair to put  the game out of reach.
