HS Roundup: Athol boys soccer scored four goals to defeat Franklin Tech

It was a senior night to remember for the Athol boys soccer team. 

Hosting Franklin Tech, the Bears scored twice in the final minutes of the first half and tacked two goals on during the final 40 minutes of action to pull away with a 4-1 victory at O’Brien Field. 

Athol got on the board with an own goal before Seidou scored in the 38th minute to give the Bears a 2-1 lead at the half. Karim Thompson scored off an assist from Landon Collins in the 54th minute before Seidou closed out the scoring off a dish from Dillon Boudreau in the 75th minute. 

Franklin Tech’s Nate Trude opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Drake Wing made five saves for Athol while Riley Pereira stopped 10 shots for the Eagles. 

Pioneer 4, Gateway 0 — Judah Glenn gave the Gator defense fits, as he scored a hat trick to lead the Panthers to a victory in Huntington Wednesday. 

Alex McClelland rounded out the scoring while Kurt Redeker, Matan Lerman-Smith and Matt Richotte provided the assists. Gavin Gammell made five saves in the win. 

Lenox 2, Mahar 1 — David Phelps opened the scoring in the 16th minute but the Millionaires tied the game before the halftime whistle and scored the game-winner in the second half to knock off the Senators in Orange Wednesday. 

Elias Roberts had the assist on Phelps’ tally while Tristan Gaj made six saves for Mahar.

Athol 3, Mahar 0 — Behind nine kills, five aces and two digs from Gianna Vaillancourt, the Bears walked away with a 25-20, 27-25, 25-23 victory over the Senators in Orange Wednesday. 

Ella Reed dished seven assists and added two kills, Morgan Brailey one ace and one dig while Skyla Basso had five assists in the winning effort. Athol JV won, 2-1. 

Field hockey

Frontier 2, Westfield 0 — Addie Harrington and Ashlie Galenski finished with the goals in the Redhawks’ shutout against the Bombers on Wednesday in Westfield. 

Ashley Taylor and Addie Harrington provided the assists while Kyra Richards saved the lone shot she faced for Frontier.

Girls soccer

Greenfield 2, Pioneer 1 — Elderina Cecunjanin and Tayler Bergeron found the back of the net for the Green Wave, allowing them to get a victory in Greenfield Tuesday. 

Zephyr Jetzon provided an assist while Annie Cobileanschi made eight saves for the Wave. Dzelila Cecunjanin scored in the second half for the Panthers while Kyler McClelland made five saves in the loss. 

Volleyball

Longmeadow 3, Frontier 1 — The Redhawks became the first team to win a set against the Lancers all season, though fell 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23 in Longmeadow Thursday. 

Olivia Machon finished with eight kills, two aces and 13 digs, Abigail Hernandez tallied six kills and 14 digs, Ariana Miller had four kills, four aces and 12 digs, Greta Hale and Emilie Candelaria each had four kills while Hannah Davis came up with 15 digs for Frontier. 

Turners 3, Pioneer 0 — Taylor Chase (one ace, two kills, 10 digs), Jacobia Tyminski (one ace, three kills, eight digs, one block), Abbie Ray (three kills, two blocks) and Greta Lewis (four digs, one block) played well in the Panthers’ loss to the Thunder Tuesday. 

Girls cross country

Mohawk Trail 22, Pope Francis 33 
Mohawk Trail 18, Monson 37 —
  Virginia Krezmien took first (17 minutes, 51 seconds) while Anya Read (17:58) and Natalie Lanoue (18:56) were the next two runners to cross, leading the Warriors to a pair of wins at Whiting Reservoir on Tuesday. 

Georgia Gauthier placed eighth (21:37) for Mohawk Trail.
