WORCESTER — The Greenfield baseball team’s magical run through the MIAA Division 5 state tournament came to an end on Tuesday. 

The 15th-seeded Green Wave pulled off three wins in a row to reach the state semifinals, but third-seeded Boston English was able to slow down the Greenfield bats in the Final Four showdown at Assumption University. 

The Eagles scored twice in the third inning for the only runs they’d need, as Boston English pitchers Armanis Romero and David Castillo combined to limit the Green Wave to two hits total. That was enough to punch a ticket to the championship game with a 2-0 victory. 

Boston English (22-2) will play No. 1 Georgetown in the state final on Friday at 4 p.m. at Polar Park in Worcester.

“I have nothing but positive things after this,” Greenfield coach Tom Suchanek said. “At 3-8 [to start the season], we could have just ended the season and gone home. They fought back. We lost four games late, three by one run and one by two runs. I’m very satisfied. Would I liked to have gone further? Absolutely. It’s not always in the cards.” 

After reaching the Div. 5 quarterfinals a season ago, the Green Wave (13-11) took another step forward this year by reaching the semis. 

Despite graduating five seniors, Suchanek said he hopes the experience of playing in a Final Four game will pay dividends next year. 

“We have five seniors and we have some young kids,” Suchanek said. “It’s a positive experience for them. Hopefully we can be back here. It can only be a positive for them to have been here. It’s certainly different from last season. That’s a plus for them. Seniors, unfortunately it’s their last game. Life continues.” 

Michael Pierce got the start for Greenfield and pitched all six innings. The senior allowed just five hits, struck out a pair and walked just one, keeping Boston English off the bases throughout. 

“Michael pitched very well,” Suchanek said. “First I thought he was going to pitch count out but he settled in and had two or three good innings. He pitched well.”

Greenfield put a pair of runners on base in the top of the first inning after eighth grader Chase Zraunig was hit by a pitch and moved to third after a base hit by Pierce, but Romero got the final out to prevent the Green Wave from striking first. 

Romero and Castillo opened the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles for the Eagles, but Romero was thrown out stealing by catcher Luca Siano at second. Pierce recorded a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning. 

It was Romero and Castillo who got Boston English going in the third. Romero singled to open the frame, stole second and Castillo knocked him in with a double to the right-center gap, giving the Eagles the opening lead. 

Castillo moved to third on a ground ball and scored on a sacrifice fly to left from Manny de Jesus, giving Boston English its 2-0 lead after three. 

Greenfield’s best chance to score came in the fifth. Romero — who got the start — had only allowed one hit going into the fifth but began losing control, walking Nick Prasol, Preston Lafleur and Deven Dubie to load the bases with one out. 

Castillo came on in relief and did the job, striking out the next two batters to get out of the jam. 

“We thought about squeezing but when you have bases loaded, you have a force play at the plate, it could turn into a double play,” Suchanek said. “Their pitchers threw well. I don’t know how many strikeouts we had but they’re a good team.” 

Pierce opened the sixth with a single for the Green Wave but it would be the final hit of the day for Greenfield. A double play and a fly out closed out the sixth before Castillo struck out a pair and caught a pop out to close the game. 

Romero pitched 4⅓ innings, striking out six and allowing the one hit. Castillo allowed one hit and struck out four the rest of the way to secure a spot in the state final.
