Bulletin board: Day 1 of the Massachusetts Shotgun Deer Hunting Season

Sunny skies and cool temperatures greeted local hunters for opening day of the 2024 Massachusetts Shotgun Deer Hunting Season on Monday.
Area checking stations were steady, highlighted by 32 deer reported at Gould’s Sugarhouse in Shelburne.
The largest buck checked locally on Monday came at Bitzer Hatchery in Montague, where Deerfield’s Sean Keller bagged a 180-pound, 8-point buck. Orange’s Joshua Chapin (170 pounds, 9 points) and Heath’s Luke Inman (164 pounds, 7 points) also checked large bucks during their first day of the season.
Inman tagged two deer at Gould’s Sugarhouse, while Joseph Klaus of Montague and Bryan LaBelle of Hinesburg, Vt. each checked two deer at Bitzer during Monday’s action.
Numbers from Sunderland Hatchery weren’t reported at press time. Any late arriving numbers will be published the following day in print.

Greenfield Elks Hoop Shoot
The Greenfield Elks Hoop Shoot is fast approaching once again.
The event is open to boys and girls ages 8-13 (as of April 1, 2025). It will be held at Franklin County’s YMCA in Greenfield on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Sawmill River 10K
Registration for the annual Sawmill River 10K has begun.
The Sawmill Run is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025 in Montague Center. The road race will begin promptly at 10 a.m. near the Village Common on Main Street. Race Day registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Montague Common Hall at 34 Main St. in Montague.
Divisions include Youth (17 yrs. & Under), Open (18-39 yrs.), Master (40-49 yrs.), Senior (50-59 yrs.), and Senior-Plus (60 yrs. & Up). Entry Fees are $30 (paid by noon Dec. 31) or $40 (thereafter). Hot and cold refreshments will be provided.
